Overview
The Land of Shadow is the sole region of the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, accessible only after defeating Mohg, Lord of Blood and interacting with Miquella's withered arm in Mohgwyn Palace. This is not a casual detour — it is a sprawling continent-sized landmass with its own progression currency, its own geography layered across underground ruins, scorched fortresses, and poison-choked swamps, and a roster of bosses that will humble even veteran Tarnished. The ambient threat level is high from the moment you arrive. Random field enemies hit hard, and without Scadutree Blessing stacks your damage output and defense will feel embarrassingly weak regardless of your RL150+ build. Tonally, the Land of Shadow is mournful and oppressive: a place Marika sealed off and tried to forget, haunted by Messmer's purges and the echoes of the Finger Maiden civilization.
Recommended Approach
Stack Scadutree Fragments before anything else. These are the DLC's power scaling system — each pair of Scadutree Fragments you spend at a Site of Grace raises your attack and damage negation by a flat percentage. You need at least Scadutree Blessing +5 before tackling any main boss, and +10 or higher before Messmer or the final fight. Fragments are scattered across the overworld, inside ruins, on corpses, and dropped by specific Flowers near Map Steles — prioritize finding Map Fragments first so you can orient yourself.
On arrival at the Gravesite Plain, head south and west to collect the first two Map Stele fragments, then follow the road northeast toward Castle Ensis. Pick up Revered Spirit Ashes along the way — these function identically to Scadutree Fragments but buff your Spirit Ash summons instead. Don't ignore them if you rely on Mimic Tear or Black Knife Tiche.
Explore broadly before committing to main bosses. The Land of Shadow rewards curiosity: side areas like Abyssal Woods (Midra) and Jagged Peak (Bayle) contain some of the strongest remembrance rewards in the game and can be tackled in parallel with the main path. Just note that Abyssal Woods strips you of your lantern and torches — bring a light source spell or the Fingerprint Helm.
Key Items
- Scadutree Fragments — Non-negotiable. Found everywhere: on Scadutree Flowers across the overworld, in chests inside Shadow Keep, dropped by NPCs. Aim for Blessing +15 before the final boss.
- Ansbach's Cookbook / Thiollier's Questline Rewards — Both NPCs found early on the Gravesite Plain offer questlines that culminate in unique ashes of war and summons. Exhaust their dialogue at every Site of Grace you rest at.
- Greatsword of Damnation (Messmer's Remembrance) — One of the cleanest strength/faith weapons in the DLC, with a devastating fire thrust weapon art. Highly recommended if you have the stats.
- Fallingstar Jaw (from the DLC Fallingstar Beast field boss near Scadu Altus) — Excellent colossal weapon for strength builds, and the beast itself drops the unique Gravity Bolt incantation.
- Iris of Grace / Iris of Occultation — Required for late-game NPC questlines and unlocking alternate endings. Missable if you defeat Metyr without speaking to Moore first.
Boss Order
- Divine Beast Dancing Lion — Your first real gate. Located in Castle Ensis after Rellana. Fight Rellana first; she guards the castle's inner fog wall. Both are manageable at Blessing +4 to +6.
- Rellana, Twin Moon Knight — Castle Ensis. Fast, punishing, but readable. A good benchmark boss for your current Scadutree level.
- Commander Gaius — Scadu Altus. Annoying cavalry boss with a boar charge. Posture-break focused strategy with heavy weapons trivializes him.
- Scadutree Avatar — Church District Ruins. Main pilgrimage boss; defeating it is required to access Enir-Ilim. Telegraph-heavy moveset, easier than it looks.
- Putrescent Knight — Finger Ruins of Rhia, optional but on the way. Drops the'Vortex of Putrescence' ash of war.
- Messmer the Impaler — Shadow Keep. The DLC's mid-point demigod. Fire-resistant armor and high poise help significantly. One of the better-designed fights in the entire game.
- Romina, Saint of the Bud — Gravesite of the Fallen, Abyssal area. Defeating her opens the path to Enir-Ilim and the endgame.
- Metyr, Mother of Fingers — Finger Ruins of Miyr. Required for the Moore questline conclusion. Bring holy resistance.
- Midra, Lord of Frenzied Flame — Abyssal Woods. Optional remembrance. Phenomenal fight; the approach through Abyssal Woods is one of the DLC's best set pieces.
- Bayle the Dread — Jagged Peak summit. Optional remembrance. Arguably the hardest pure dragon fight in the series. Igon's summon sign is nearby — absolutely use him for the spectacle alone.
- Promised Consort Radahn — Enir-Ilim, final boss. Two phases. Build for high DPS burst in phase two. Scadutree Blessing +20 recommended.
Exit Path
There is no exit from the Land of Shadow — completing the DLC concludes with the Promised Consort Radahn fight, after which you receive the Remembrance of a God and Radahn's signature armor set. Returning to the base game is possible at any time by using a Sending Gate back to the Mausoleum Compound or simply recalling to a base-game Site of Grace via the map. If you have loose questlines in the base game (Ranni, Millicent, Dung Eater), finishing the DLC first has no negative impact on them.
