RELLANA, TWIN MOON KNIGHT
Phase Strategy
Rellana is the gatekeeper to the Land of Shadow's inner territories. She is faster than Malenia, more relentless than Maliketh, and dual-wields swords that split elemental damage types mid-combo. Most players hit a wall here because they treat her like a base-game knight boss. She is not. She is a rhythm boss disguised as an aggression check.
The arena is wide but deceptive — Rellana covers distance instantly with her gliding lunge attacks. There is no safe range. You must learn her tells or you will die in the opening thirty seconds.
Phase I — Twin Blades of Fire and Frost
Rellana opens with her left-hand frost sword active and right-hand fire sword sheathed. She alternates between single-element attacks and dual-element combos. The key insight: her combos extend based on which sword she swings first. Frost-initiated combos are shorter (2-3 hits). Fire-initiated combos chain into 4-5 hits with delayed follow-ups.
Critical: Do not roll early. Rellana's windups pause for a quarter-second longer than your muscle memory expects. Roll on the flash of her blade, not the raised arm. Rolling early puts you in recovery when the actual swing comes.
Her frost sword attacks inflict frostbite buildup. Two full combos landed equals frostbite proc, which staggers you and increases damage taken by 20% for eight seconds. Equip Speckled Hardtear in your Flask of Wondrous Physick to slow buildup significantly.
Watch her footwork. When she glides backward, she is preparing either:
- A lunging thrust (single stab, long range)
- Or her Twin Moon Slash — a cross-cut X-pattern projectile attack
The Twin Moon Slash is her longest punish window in phase 1. Roll through the projectile toward her, then land 2-3 R1s while she recovers.
Phase II — Moonlight Ascendant
Below 50% HP, Rellana raises both swords and channels twin beams of moonlight. The cinematic lasts four seconds. Heal and buff during this window. It is the longest free opening in the entire fight.
Phase 2 changes everything:
- Both swords now deal mixed fire/frost damage simultaneously. Frostbite buildup doubles.
- She gains Rellana's Twin Moons — a massive dual-sorcery spell that fires two tracking orbs. They explode on contact or after six seconds.
- Her combo chains extend by 1-2 hits. Strings that ended after three swings in phase 1 now have surprise fourth slashes.
- She can now dash-cancel recovery frames. Punish windows shrink from 2 R1s to 1 R1.
The tracking moons are the phase's signature threat. When she casts them, sprint perpendicular to her — do not roll. Rolling triggers the explosion early. Let the orbs pass behind you, then roll the delayed detonation.
Critical: In phase 2, greed kills. Limit yourself to single R1 punishes unless she whiffs her Twin Moon Slash. The combo extensions catch everyone the first dozen attempts.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Frost thrust (3-hit combo) | Roll forward-right on hit 2. The 3rd thrust whiffs behind you. Punish 2 R1s. | | Fire overhead slam | She raises the right sword high. Roll forward into her on the downswing. Punish 1 R1. | | Twin Moon Slash (X projectile) | Roll through the center of the X toward her. Punish 3 R1s or charged R2. | | Dual-blade spin (360°) | She spins twice in phase 1, three times in phase 2. Roll into her on the final spin. | | Gliding lunge | Telegraphed by backward glide. Strafe-walk left, then roll forward as she commits. | | Rellana's Twin Moons (P2) | Sprint perpendicular for 3 seconds. Roll backward when the orbs detonate behind you. | | Fire/frost combo chain (P2) | She alternates elements per swing. Count to 4, then roll away and reset. Do not greed. |
Recommended Loadout
Rellana is weak to two things: bleed and poise damage. A bleed-stagger build trivializes the fight.
- Weapon: Rivers of Blood +10 or dual Nagakiba with Seppuku Ash of War. Bleed procs every 6-8 hits and chunks 15% of her HP per proc.
- Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +10 with bleed weapons equipped. The mimic will proc bleed independently, effectively doubling your proc rate.
- Talismans:
- Lord of Blood's Exultation (attack boost on bleed proc)
- Rotten Winged Sword Insignia (successive attack boost)
- Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage reduction)
- Speckled Hardtear in Flask (frost resistance)
- Buffs: Bloodboil Aromatic for phase transitions. The attack buff lasts 90 seconds and stacks with Exultation.
For non-bleed builds:
- Heavy jump-attack weapons (Giant-Crusher, Greatsword) can stagger her in 4-5 charged R2s.
- Black Knife Tiche +10 is the best summon if not using Mimic Tear — Tiche avoids combos better than any other ash.
Strategy Notes
The community consensus on Rellana: she is the DLC's "skill floor" boss. If you can beat her, you can progress. If you cannot, the fights ahead (Messmer, Bayle, Promised Consort Radahn) will obliterate you.
Three mistakes that kill runs:
- Rolling too early. Her delays are longer than Margit's, longer than Godfrey's. Wait for the blade flash.
- Chasing in phase 2. When she dashes backward, do not sprint after her. She is baiting you into the Twin Moons cast. Let her come to you.
- Not watching the off-hand sword. Whichever blade she raises first determines combo length. Frost = short, fire = long.
If you are stuck after 20+ attempts, the detour is Ancient Ruins of Rauh. The runes from clearing that zone and upgrading your weapon to +24/+10 bring you to comfortable parity. Rellana is not a DPS check — she is a pattern-recognition test — but extra damage shortens the windows where RNG can screw you.
Rellana teaches precision. The fights ahead demand it. Learn her rhythm, roll late, and bleed her dry.
