Phase Strategy

Astel is spectacle masquerading as difficulty. The arena is vast, the creature is enormous, and the cosmic horror aesthetic is arresting — but underneath the presentation is a straightforward endurance test. Most of Astel's attacks are telegraphed seconds in advance. The key is not mechanical execution, but distance discipline.

This is a single-phase fight with no HP threshold transitions. Astel simply escalates its moveset frequency below 50% HP. The arena itself is the greater threat: the Lake of Rot approach means you enter with limited flasks, and Astel's delayed grab attack kills overconfident players who have already mentally won the fight.

The Grab — Your Only Real Threat

Critical: Astel's cosmic grab is the only move in its arsenal that will kill you from full HP. The tell is unmistakable: Astel rears back, its mandibles open wide, and it lunges forward with both pincers extended. You have approximately 1.5 seconds from the first animation frame to react.

The counter is counterintuitive: dodge left, perpendicular to its body, not backward. Rolling backward keeps you in the grab's extended hitbox. Rolling into its left side (your right as you face it) causes the grab to whiff entirely. If caught, the grab animation lasts 4 seconds and deals 80-100% of your max HP in a single tick.

Most players die to this grab between 60-40% of Astel's remaining HP, when muscle memory from the first half of the fight makes them believe they have established a rhythm. Do not fall into this trap. Every grab attempt demands the same frame-one respect you gave it at the start.

Teleportation and Camera Management

Below 60% HP, Astel begins teleporting across the arena. The teleport is always paired with one of three follow-ups:

  1. Meteor rain — Astel reappears above you and summons a barrage of homing projectiles. Sprint in a wide circle; do not lock on during this phase.
  2. Tail slam — Astel materializes directly behind you and slams its tail downward. The sound cue is a low hum followed by a sharp crack. Roll forward on the crack.
  3. Gravity well — Astel creates a purple sphere that pulls you inward, then detonates. Sprint away immediately; the pull is stronger than your dodge roll.

The camera is your enemy during teleports. Unlock, reorient manually, and re-lock only after Astel has committed to an attack. Fighting locked-on for the entire encounter will get you killed by off-screen tail slams.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Cosmic grab (mandible lunge) | Dodge left (your right) perpendicular to its body. Never backward. | | Laser beam sweep (horizontal) | Sprint toward Astel's left side. The beam always sweeps right-to-left. | | Laser beam sweep (vertical) | Strafe-walk perpendicular. The vertical sweep is slower but covers more ground. | | Tail slam (from behind) | Unlock camera, listen for the crack sound cue, roll forward. | | Meteor rain (post-teleport) | Sprint in wide circles. Lock-off for 6 seconds until the rain ends. | | Wing slam (close range) | Roll into Astel's body. The slam hitbox curls outward from the wings. | | Gravity well (purple sphere) | Sprint away immediately. The pull radius expands over 2 seconds. |

Recommended Loadout

Astel's cosmic physiology makes it weak to bleed and lightning. The fight is long enough that bleed procs will save you 2-3 minutes of attrition.

  • Weapon: Rivers of Blood (katana, bleed + fire), Bolt of Gransax (spear, pure lightning), or Uchigatana with Thunderbolt Ash of War. Bleed procs deal ~10% of Astel's max HP per trigger — you will proc 3-4 times in a clean fight.
  • Spirit Ash: Mimic Tear +10 or Black Knife Tiche +10. Both survive Astel's combos and provide consistent aggro split. Mimic Tear with a bleed build will proc on its own.
  • Talismans:
    • Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman (physical damage reduction — most of Astel's attacks are physical despite the cosmic theming)
    • Lightning Scorpion Charm (if using lightning weapons)
    • Lord of Blood's Exultation (if using bleed weapons — +20% damage on bleed proc)
    • Green Turtle Talisman (stamina regen — long sprint windows during meteor rain)
  • Flask setup: 10 Crimson, 4 Cerulean. The fight is a stamina test more than a resource test.

The Lake of Rot Approach

Before entering Astel's arena, you must cross the Lake of Rot — a massive poison swamp that inflicts Scarlet Rot buildup. The optimal path:

  1. Equip Immunizing Horn Charm and consume Preserving Boluses every 30 seconds.
  2. Activate the four stone platforms to create a safe walking path. The platforms are permanent once activated.
  3. Enter Astel's fog gate with full flasks. If you used more than 3 Crimson Flasks crossing the lake, reset at the nearest grace and try again.

The coffin shortcut from the Deeproot Depths is faster but requires completing Fia's questline first. Most players fight Astel during Ranni's questline and will not have this shortcut available.

A Note on Patience

Astel punishes greed harder than difficulty. The creature's size creates false openings — its head is often out of melee range even when it appears vulnerable. Do not chase. Let Astel come to you. The safest punish windows are:

  1. After the horizontal laser sweep ends (2 R1s to the head)
  2. After the wing slam (1 R1 to the body, then retreat)
  3. After a failed grab attempt (3-4 R1s while it recovers)

Every other window is a 1 R1 maximum. The fight will take 8-12 minutes. Accept this. Players who try to shorten the fight to 5 minutes by over-committing will die to chip damage accumulation or a surprise grab at 10% HP.

Astel is not mechanically demanding. It is a test of whether you have learned to fight without panic.

The Lake of Rot crossing teaches patience. The fight itself is the final exam. If you can defeat Astel without using more than 6 flasks, you have internalized the lesson FromSoftware is teaching: distance, discipline, and delayed gratification.

Related Bosses

Defeating Astel completes the Lake of Rot segment of Ranni's questline. Collect the Dark Moon Ring from the chest behind Astel's arena, then return to Renna's Rise in Liurnia. The questline continues to the Moonlight Altar and eventually unlocks the Dark Moon Greatsword — one of the best intelligence weapons in the game.

A second variant of this boss, Astel, Stars of Darkness, appears in the Yelough Anix Tunnel (Consecrated Snowfield). The moveset is identical but the arena is smaller and the HP pool is slightly higher. Consider it a victory lap.
