Phase Strategy

The Ancient Hero of Zamor is a single-phase evergaol fight designed to test your understanding of delayed attacks and spacing. This is not a war of attrition — the arena is small, his mobility is high, and every opening he gives you is a trap unless you know what to look for.

Zamor fights like a dancer. His attacks flow into one another with deceptive rhythm. The key insight: he telegraphs every major attack with a ground-frost AoE. When you see the white mist pool beneath him, he is about to launch a gap-closer or leap. Do not roll yet — wait for the actual movement.

The fight is short. At 1840 HP, most builds will end this in under two minutes if they play clean. The difficulty lies in reading his combos, not surviving a marathon.

Single Phase — Frost and Fury

Zamor opens aggressively. He closes distance with spinning acrobatics and punishes panic rolls with follow-up slashes. His greatsword has enormous reach, and every hit applies frost buildup. Two clean hits will proc frostbite — a 20% stamina penalty and an instant chunk of your health bar.

Critical: Zamor's frost AoE puddles appear before his leap attacks. When you see white mist pool beneath his feet, back off immediately. The AoE radius is larger than it looks and procs frostbite on contact.

His combo strings are 2-4 hits long. The final hit always has a longer recovery window — that is your punish opportunity. Never greed a hit mid-combo. He will pivot mid-swing and clip you on the follow-through.

Below 50% HP, Zamor becomes more aggressive with his leaping slash and adds a rare spinning dive attack. The dive covers half the arena and ends in a ground-slam AoE. Sprint perpendicular to him during the windup — do not roll until the slam connects.

Attacks & Counters

| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Leaping overhead slash | Roll forward into him as he descends. The hitbox is narrow. | | Spinning double-slash | Two horizontal spins. Roll on the second spin, then punish. | | Frost AoE + lunge | Back up when the AoE appears. Sprint-walk sideways, then roll into his lunge. | | Ground slam (rare) | He plants his sword and creates a shockwave. Jump or roll backward. | | Spinning dive (low HP) | Sprint perpendicular during windup. Roll into him as the dive ends. | | Quick thrust combo | Three quick jabs. Roll backward on hit 2, then punish after hit 3. |

Recommended Loadout

Zamor is weak to bleed and lightning. The optimal strategy is to proc hemorrhage twice before he hits 30% HP.

  • Weapon: Uchigatana with Bloody Slash ash of war. Bleed builds up rapidly on his low HP pool. Alternatively, Reduvia for ranged bleed procs if you are struggling with spacing.
  • Incantations: Lightning Spear or Electrify Armament. The lightning weakness is significant — enchanted weapons deal 20% bonus damage.
  • Talismans:
    • Spear Talisman (thrust counter bonus, works with katana thrusts)
    • Ritual Sword Talisman (damage bonus at full HP)
    • Crimson Amber Medallion (frostbite procs are unavoidable — extra HP buffer helps)
  • Items: Thawfrost Boluses ×5. These clear frostbite instantly and reset the buildup meter. Buy them from the Nomadic Merchant in southern Limgrave.

For pure melee builds, a shield with 100% physical block trivializes most of his sword combos. Use a medium shield with Barricade Shield ash of war — guard counters deal massive poise damage and stagger him after 3-4 hits.

Strategy Notes

The Ancient Hero of Zamor is a rhythm check. His attacks flow together smoothly, but each combo has a deliberate pause before the final hit. That pause is your cue to prepare a punish, not to attack immediately.

Key timing: When Zamor spins his sword above his head and the frost AoE pools beneath him, count to two, then roll. Most players roll on one and get clipped by the lunge.

If you are struggling with the timing, summon Spirit Jellyfish Ashes. The jellyfish tanks one or two hits and poisons Zamor over time. The poison damage is minimal, but the aggro reset gives you free windows to heal and reposition.

Evergaols disable horse and co-op summons. Spirit ashes are your only backup. Plan accordingly.

Lore Pause

The Zamor warriors once served the Gloam-Eyed Queen and fought alongside Maliketh during the War of the Giants. This Ancient Hero is one of the last of their kind — a hollow shell guarding a memory. His frost attacks echo the Mountaintops of the Giants, where his people once ruled. The armor set he drops (Zamor Armor) is one of the best light armors in the game for frost resistance.

Zamor is not cruel. He is duty-bound. You are not his enemy — you are simply in his way.

After defeating the Ancient Hero of Zamor, the Crucible Knight evergaol in Stormhill offers a similar test of patience and timing. Both fights reward deliberate play over aggression. If you mastered Zamor's rhythm, you are ready for the Crucible Knight.
