ANCESTOR SPIRIT
Phase Strategy
Ancestor Spirit is a mercy — a rare moment in Elden Ring where FromSoftware lets you breathe. This spectral elk is the gentlest mandatory-optional boss in the game, designed to reward exploration of Siofra River without punishing inexperience. The arena is vast, the attacks are telegraphed, and the health pool is forgiving. This is a victory lap, not a wall.
That said, do not sleep on the fight entirely. Ancestor Spirit punishes passive play with its aerial dive and can outlast careless stamina management. The key is simple: stay close, stay mobile, and bring holy damage.
Single Phase — The Eternal Stag
Unlike its stronger variant (Regal Ancestor Spirit), this version never gains new attacks or phases. What you see at the start is what you fight until the end. Ancestor Spirit's moveset revolves around three core behaviors:
- Charge attacks — it lowers its head and rushes forward in a straight line
- Antler sweeps — wide horizontal swipes that cover its frontal arc
- Aerial dive — it leaps backward, floats momentarily, then slams down with an AOE impact
The most important insight: Ancestor Spirit cannot turn quickly during combos. Once it commits to a charge or sweep, its momentum carries it forward. Circle-strafe right (its left flank) and you will position yourself outside most of its threat range while staying in punish distance.
The boss also heals periodically by absorbing light from the spirit animals scattered across the arena. These moments are your largest damage windows — the absorption animation locks it in place for 3-4 seconds. Sprint in and unload.
Critical: Equip a weapon with innate holy damage or apply Sacred Blade Ash of War to your main weapon before entering. Ancestor Spirit takes 20% bonus damage from holy — enough to shorten the fight by a full minute.
Attacks & Counters
| Attack | Counter | |--------|---------| | Forward charge | Dodge roll perpendicular to its path. Do not roll backward — it will catch you mid-recovery. | | Antler sweep (single) | Roll into the sweep, toward its body. The antlers are the hitbox; its torso is safe. | | Antler sweep combo (2-3x) | Same principle. Roll into each sweep. Punish after the final one. | | Rear kick | Only triggers if you attack from directly behind. Stay at its left or right flank instead. | | Aerial dive | Sprint away as it leaps. The AOE radius is deceptively small — 8 meters is safe. | | Spirit absorption | Free damage window. Sprint to its side and land 3-4 charged R2s or a full weapon art combo. |
The rear kick is the only "gotcha" move, and it only matters if you overcommit to tail-chasing. Position yourself at 45-degree angles from its hindquarters and you will never see it.
Recommended Loadout
Ancestor Spirit is one of the few bosses where you can experiment with off-meta builds and still win comfortably. That said, the fastest clear comes from:
- Weapon: Any weapon infused with Sacred or buffed with Sacred Blade Ash of War. If you have not found Sacred Blade yet, it is sold by Knight Bernahl at Warmaster's Shack in northern Limgrave.
- Alternatively: Winged Scythe (faith weapon with innate holy damage) trivializes this fight.
- Spirit Ash: Unnecessary, but Lone Wolves +3 or Jellyfish will tank while you punish. The boss's low aggression means summons survive longer than usual.
- Talismans:
- Sacred Scorpion Charm (+12% holy damage) if you are using a holy weapon
- Green Turtle Talisman for stamina regeneration — the arena is huge and you will spend half the fight sprinting
- Buffs: Exalted Flesh (+20% physical damage for 30 seconds) is cheap and effective. Buy from the Nomadic Merchant in northern Siofra River.
Bleed weapons work, but poorly — Ancestor Spirit is a spirit entity and has high bleed resistance. Stick to holy or raw physical damage.
Lore Pause
Ancestor Spirit is not hostile in the traditional sense. It is a memory — the crystallized echo of the ancestral civilizations that once worshipped in Siofra River. The spirit animals you kill to light the braziers are not enemies; they are offerings. You are not slaying a beast. You are communing with it.
After the fight, the Ancestor Spirit dissolves into light. No scream, no rage. Just silence. The Siofra River basin returns to its eternal stillness.
This is what grace looks like when it is not corrupted.
Getting Here
Many players stumble into Siofra River by accident and leave immediately, intimidated by the high-level enemies on the surface. The trick: ignore the surface entirely. Sprint south along the western cliffside until you reach the Hallowhorn Grounds grace. From there, light the eight braziers scattered across the plateau (each requires killing a spirit animal nearby). Once all eight are lit, return to the Hallowhorn Grounds and enter the boss fog gate.
The entire pre-fight sequence can be completed in under 10 minutes without fighting a single enemy beyond the spirit animals.
Related Bosses
Ancestor Spirit is the easier of two ancestral bosses. The second, Regal Ancestor Spirit, awaits in Nokron, Eternal City. Regal Ancestor has double the HP, enhanced aggression, and a phase-2 heal that restores 30% of its health. Consider Ancestor Spirit a practice run for that fight — the movesets overlap significantly.
After Ancestor Spirit, continue exploring Siofra River's cliffside areas. The Dragonkin Soldier of Nokstella lurks near the southern waterfall and drops a Smithing Stone Bell Bearing — far more valuable than the runes from this fight.
